Pain Management

This three hour course is intended to provide clinicians with information regarding pain management and its treatment. The course materials are presented as evidenced-based and oriented to clinical application for standard skilled therapy for pain management. The course defines key skills to accurately assess, treat and document for pain. Clinicians will also be able to reinforce concepts and treatment techniques using physical agent modalities for pain management in the elderly.

Seminar Objectives

  • Determine the expected rationale, application, use of and outcomes of treatment consistent with therapy goals within the OT/PT framework.
  • Identify common causes and risk factors associated with pain in the elderly population.
  • Explain the anatomy, physiology and perception of pain.
  • Explain the common types of pain in the elderly.
  • Select and administer validated pain assessment tool.
  • Determine how various physical agent modalities to treat most common pain conditions in the elderly.
  • Describe the effectiveness of Ultrasound, E-Stim, for pain modulation in the elderly.
  • Explain mobilization techniques common for pain relief along with patient education for coping with pain.
  • Select various medical diagnosis that are classified as painful such as arthritis, phantom pain, RSD and peripheral nerve pain.
  • Develop and implement a Medicare compliant interdisciplinary plan of care for pain management in the elderly.
  • Explain the contraindications, warnings and precautions of modality usage for the treatment of pain.
