Wound Care

This four hour course is intended to provide clinicians with information regarding the wounds in the geriatric population. The program focuses on educating clinicians regarding physiology of skin and healing, pathological changes occurring in altered healing, assessment of wounds including: phase of healing, wound staging, circulatory assessment, edema and sensation measurement as well as appropriate sizing. The course also educates clinicians in appropriate treatment of wounds in areas including: debridement, dressing and topical agents, as well as modality usage. The course materials are presented as evidenced-based and oriented to clinical application for standard skilled therapy for wound care.

Seminar Objectives

  • Explain normal skin physiology.
  • Explain the the normal process of healing as well as abnormalities that may occur during the healing process.
  • Identify common causes and risk factors associated with wounds in the elderly population.
  • Summarize areas of assessment for wounds including phase of healing, wound staging, circulatory assessment, edema and sensation measurement as well as appropriate sizing.
  • Summarize the proper utilization of debridement methods, including mechanical, manual, chemical and autolytic.
  • Delineate acceptable modality usage to promote wound healing, including indications, contraindications, and treatment parameters for: electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and whirlpool.
  • Expain the selection of appropriate wound dressing based on wound presentation.
