Dementia Management
ATTENTION: Mississippi PTs/PTAs - you may use two (2) hours of this training for your required credits in ethics.
This three hour course is intended to provide clinicians with information regarding dementia and the management of dementia in a skilled nursing facility. The course materials provide background information for dementia which includes the types and causes of dementia as well as dementia statistics and risk factors. Additionally, materials are presented as evidence-based and oriented to clinical application for screening procedures, skilled assessment and treatment for dementia. Clinicians will also be able to reinforce concepts and techniques using evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies.
Seminar Objectives
- List the types of dementias, including primary and secondary dementias.
- List at least 10 possible causes of dementia.
- Explain the current prevalence of dementia
- Identify the direct and indirect costs of Alzheimer’s and other dementias to Medicare, Medicaid and businesses per year.
- List the risk factors of dementia.
- Indicate the most common type of drug that is prescribed to dementia patients.
- List the criteria that should be present when a psychoactive drug is prescribed by a physician.
- Summarize appropriate nursing assessments and documentation to determine prior level of function and document decline in function for documenting medical necessity.
- Explain the screening procedure.
- List the two additional screening tools identified in the program.
- List the seven levels of dementia/Alzheimer’s and explain the characteristics of each level.
- List the common CPT codes used by SLPs in the evaluation and treatment of speech/language, cognition and swallowing. Identify which are time based and which are service based.
- List three hints for assessment of dementia patients.
- Name the five assessment tools identified in the program.
- Define the ABCD.
- Explain the relationship between dysphagia and dementia.
- Explain the rationale for completing a bedside swallow evaluation.
- Name the criteria that make up the two phases of the bedside swallow evaluation.
- List at least five language and cognition treatment approaches.
- Define Montessori- based therapy techniques as they relate to the dementia population.
- Identify the creator of the spaced retrieval training.
- Name the two approaches in the spaced retrieval training method.
- Discuss the possible causes of aggressive behavior in dementia patients.
- List at least eight common behaviors seen in dementia patients.
- Identify the basic tips that should be followed when dealing with aggressive clients/residents.
- Explain some suggestions for handling various behaviors of dementia patients.
- Discuss the purpose of validation therapy.
- List at least four validation therapy techniques.
- List the five areas of dysphagia treatment identified in the program.
- Name some commercial assessment tools available for purchase.
