Cognition: Aging, Assessment and Treatment
This three hour course is intended to provide clinicians with information regarding cognition as it relates to the aging process, assessment and treatment strategies. The course materials are presented as evidence-based and oriented to the clinical application for screening procedures, skilled assessment and treatment for cognitive loss and/or decline. Clinicians will also be able to reinforce concepts and techniques using evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies.
Seminar Objectives
- Explain cognition as it applies to the aging brain.
- Identify effects seen in the aging brain and how it impacts function.
- Delineate various types of memory.
- Identify the disease processes; specifically Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease and how it impacts cognitive function.
- Explain the stages of Alzheimer's Disease.
- Explain Mild Cognitive Impairment and how to detect changes to assist in identifying potential patients to place on caseload.
- Identify screening procedures and basic assessment protocols for SNF setting as required by Medicare.
- Identify routine nursing assessments to assist in obtaining prior level of function for assessments.
- Identify and select treatment materials found in the facility to facilitate therapeutic interventions.
