Speech-Language Pathologist
Speech-language pathologists work with patients who cannot make speech sounds, or cannot make them clearly; those who have speech rhythm and fluency problems, such as stuttering; patients with voice quality problems, such as inappropriate pitch or harsh voice; those with problems understanding and producing language; and those with cognitive communication impairments, such as attention, memory, and problem solving disorders. They also work with patients who have oral motor problems causing eating and swallowing difficulties.
As a speech-language pathologist, would you like to:
- Use treatment strategies, techniques and modalities to help a patient with swallowing disorder?
- Address a patient's deficits that result from neurological impairments and/or dementia so that he can effectively communicate and socialize with family, caregivers, and the community?
- Assist a patient with hearing loss to communicate within their living environment and as well as the community at-large?
- Help patients with articulation disorders to learn how to say speech sounds correctly
- Assist patients with voice disorders to develop proper control of the vocal and respiratory systems for correct voice production
- Assist patients with aphasia to improve comprehension of speech and reading and production of spoken and written language
- Assist patients with severe communication disorders with the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, including speech-generating devices (SGDs)
